Happy Victory in Iraq Day!

http://www.zombietime.com/vi_day/

I'm very excited about this being declared Victory in Iraq Day, because it's also my birthday.

Congrats to Iraq - it's been through so much grief at the hands of so many. I'm pleased to see it stand up as a democracy and to see the violence there falling to such low levels. There's always more work to be done, but it looks like Iraq is pretty much capable of taking care of itself, with the US serving more of a back-up role than as the primary role. Soon we won't even be needed for the secondary role! Our troops have done an incredible job, and my prayers are always with them. I'm proud that President Bush decided to go with the Surge under the leadership of General Petraeus. I'm also pleased that President-Elect Obama seems inclined to let things continue their natural wind-down. Things had been going very badly for everyone concerned before the surge - so it's wonderful to see how much things have improved there in the last year. There are lots of parties that would like to see Iraq fail, and we have a lot of interest in seeing it remain a viable democracy. Our security is greatly increased when a former threat becomes a willing ally.
